I don't know whether Vanilla has this feature. vBulletin does, and I've seen it put to good use on Southperry.
The idea is that if someone derails a thread, that specific user can be blocked from posting in the thread, while everyone else is still free to discuss the topic constructively.
If this option is used early enough, it can prevent the thread from becoming a train wreck. Especially since each of the user's posts in the thread has the title "Banned from this thread" in red, which helps other people resist the urge to either one-up those posts or try to counter them.

If that feature cannot be incorporated, I think that putting a user in time-out (temp ban) is sometimes preferable to locking a thread. Depends on the amount of general interest in the thread's original topic (vs. the derailment) and the user's behavior in other threads.

I agree with this, it's unfortunate that a thread needs to be locked while other try and have a reasonable and useful discussion. I stopped commenting on several threads because they just become endless angry rants, and I don't enjoy toxic environments like that.

Second; I don't agree that a thread should be locked simply because a few people aren't following the rules. If we can't lock them out, they should get a temp ban or a permanent ban for breaking the rules. I'm not sure why everyone needs to suffer for somebody mistakes.
Yup. To me, it seems like such a waste to completely disable responses on what could be meaningful and valuable contributions to a discussion, just because some asshat decided to go all postal in the middle of a particular thread and as a result derail it. It is a matter of individual discipline, and should be treated as such accordingly.

Locking a thread because of this happening only punishes everyone and robs from the purpose of the forum being here in the first place. It gives any particular user way too much power, because they can easily do this intentionally just to shut some one else down for personal reasons.

This would obviously require some degree of advanced moderation of course, but it should be implemented here, especially considering the oft tumultuous environment within.
