Another Returning Player Looking for Help

I used to play tons of MapleStory back in high school, but when I went to college my schedule changed and other things took priority. I'm now in the summer before my final year at University and I've been looking for something to kill time with when I'm home from my internship in the evenings. I know this probably makes me a bit older than a chunk of the player base, but meh.

Anyhow, things have obviously changed quite a bit since I last played. At the time my main was a Battle Mage and I enjoyed that quite a bit. Repetitive, but not too bad. Is the BM still a viable class? Other classes that I was interested in at the time were the Night Lord, Blaze Wizard, and spearman. Opinions on those classes are also welcome, as are opinions on other classes in general.

My other question is about what world I should go for. I've got no idea what reboot world is about. I don't have any irl friend who play the game, so I'll be wanting somewhere a bit more populated.

General meso making advice would be appreciated as well. I'm assuming the economy is quite different than when I last played! I'm going to be starting out completely unfunded, and while I have a bit of expendable income I'm probably not going to be putting too much money if any into the game.

Thanks in advance for any advice. I appreciate it!

For a start here is a returning player guide on Maplestory Reddit: r/MapleStory New/Returning player? Consult this Quick Start Guide!

A lot of classes are still viable due to balances over several years. Instead of choosing which is the top one based on the damage-per-second, damage-per-minute, or hits-per-second I would highly suggest to find a class that's most enjoyable to you.

Reboot world in GMS is a place that has killed off the pay-to-win structure by removing items in their Cash Shop so NX cannot be used for power. Trading is also blocked, along with equipment not being able to pass through storage, so the only way a player can upgrade is by using mesos and playing the game. That also means the economy is non-existent in this world. Scrolling is also non-existent but you can buy cubes for mesos to re-roll for potential in the Cash Shop. There's also Star Force which requires mesos too. The slight problem is that people cap out early in terms of damage due to the lack of other upgrading options being accessible. The only way to make mesos in Reboot is by farming and bossing.

In other servers, pay-to-win is still a thing and the economy has gone worse in many worlds due to inflation and mesos being more worthless than before. However, taking advantage of the market and events are the way to survive in this world. You can also sell items by doing daily/weekly bosses and extract equipment.

    • Usually there is an extractor in channel 1 Ardentmill. If not you'll require a certain level of Alchemy to extract.
    • Artdentmill is a town of crafting. There are 5 professions which replaced the Maker Skill.
    • Ardentmill can be accessed in most towns by Quick Move (the orange button) and then clicking the orange roof portal. Press yes and you'll be warped there.

Extracting equipment gives item crystals which sell on the market. Superior Item Crystals are the ones usually in most demand due to their usage for Master Craftsman and Meister Cubes.

Another way is to sell equipment directly. Some items such as Condensed Power Crystal, Aquatic Letter Eye Accessory, Silver Blossom Ring, Royal Black Metal Shoulder, Crystal Ventus Badge, and Pink Holy Cup may come from lower level bosses but they do sell for a chunk of mesos in the market. Use Auction House and not the Free Market if you don't have a Permit/Hired Merchant.

    • The Auction House can be accessed in-town through Quick Move or somewhere on one of the menu lists.
    • You can list an item for 24 hours. Listing requires a certain amount of mesos.
    • If the item gets sold you can retrieve your mesos in transactions page of the Auction House.
    • If the item listing expires you can retrieve the item in transactions page of the Auction House.
    • If you buy an item in Auction House you can retrieve the item in transactions page of the Auction House.

A lot of people would recommend you to do Gollux for many reasons. You should look it up.

I will say one thing. Reboot or Non-Reboot, they both have pros and cons so choose wisely. I'd also like to say you can play in Non-Reboot worlds without spending a penny or dime and still get off with a good funded character.

Thanks for the detailed post! I'll check into the world details a bit more when I'm not out. I'm glad the jobs are fairly balanced though--I was a bit worried that older jobs would have been completely outclassed by newer ones.

I know how you feel. When Pirates were released, Cygnus Knights, Aran, Evan, etc. (not too sure which order was which) I felt the same thing too. Newer classes overshadowing older ones due to the lack of reworks and/or changes. In today's game, changes to classes are extremely common for most of them.
