Explorer book, quest and npcs gone mid quest

Hi,

Just need some help with the quest line for the gold maple leaf emblem. I got up to the part where I had to get the bucket of water to put out the fire on at maple tree hill on maple island. I spoke to one of npcs to proceed with the quest but something happened and now the questline is gone, my book disappeared from the inventory and sugar is not on the map and I cannot get another book.

If anyone can help with this it would be appreciated.
