I have recently retrieved an old account after years of quitting. I did not know there was an ign wipe and now i'm stuck with all my characters ign with #some number. Is there a way to change it other than buying a name changer?

    Perhaps contact support and explain your situation? I think people may've gotten something sorted out this way.

    If you had an account that you hadn't played for a while, everyone that had the #number problem was sent to reset their password and reactivate, correct? If you actually read the email, it'll say something along these lines:

    Your Nexon account has been deactivated due to suspicious account activity. This has been done automatically to safeguard your account. You can reactivate your account using the information below.
    Click link { blahblah }
    After you click the link, you will be prompted to provide a new password for your account.
    After you receive notification that your account has been reactivated, please log in to your active game accounts and verify that no unauthorized transactions have occurred. Should you find that unauthorized transactions have occurred, please submit a ticket to Nexon Customer Support as soon as possible.
    So yes, you'll need to let them know about it. It's either this or they're just deleting old characters.

    Actually the de-activation happens within a year's time and it is completely unrelated to IGNs changed to numbers.

    Refer to here:
    Character Name Changes Are Coming October 15, 2015

    We are pleased to announce that beginning Thursday, October 15, millions of character names will become available for use! In all of MapleStory’s 10-year history, we have never before freed up the character names of inactive players. Because so many characters exist, it’s difficult to find meaningful names for new players. Many of these characters are no longer played, but the names remain in use.

    For the first time ever, we plan to perform a truly massive name change. All characters under Lv. 200 on accounts that have not been logged in since January 1, 2013 will have their names changed to a combination of numerals. This change will be performed in the scheduled maintenance on October 15.

    By changing these names to numerals, the original names will once again be available for use. To coincide with this, we will be having a free name change event from October 15 through October 21. After the maintenance on October 15, all players will be able to request a free name change for one character per world on their account through the event notifier on the left side of the game window. All of the free name changes will be processed in the scheduled maintenance on October 22.
