I never said they should extend the event because people have lives, I said they should extend the event because they cut it by four hours. The 'having a life' statement was in response to you saying that people should have finished it earlier and planned their time better. You are reading far too much between the lines here.
Isn't the point of the having it end on a patch so they can remove it during the patch/maintenance, cause that's the only time everyone will be off and they can edit the code?
Yes, absolutely - but when the event is advertised as running until Dec 13th 23:59, and they bring the game down 4 hours before that time, they are no longer fulfilling the timeline that they established. And on the patch note, I looked through the patches/server checks for Dec/Nov, and half were on Wednesday and the other half on Thursday, so it's not even predictable as to a day these updates might happen, hence why I say 24 hours notice for a scheduled game update/server check should be mandatory practice.
