Determination ring not working?

I don't see the determination ring giving exp boost

Is it not working or is it that i'm getting the wrong idea of how it works?

I can get the boost from just creating a party and equipping the ring right?

    You need to have another party member on your map, though they can be inactive/non-leeching.
