I can't seem to figure out how to earn Home Coins. I'm on the Intro to Interior Design quest where I need to collect furnishings/blueprints.

Apparently you can find somewhere in that huge wall of text, called the Homecoming Patch Notes, that you can sell the furniture you don't need for those home coins. To be fair, I wasn't able to see that in the Patch notes either, but found it using a Google search.
I'm not in game right now, so I can't say how much you get, or if the furniture you get from the questline also count, but you can at least let your caretaker go shopping (which takes either 6, or 9 hours, depending on what you select).

    *EDIT*
Today I tested out what I said before and indeed, the items you get from the questline won't give you Home coins, but the one you've earned through 'shopping' will get you 1 Home coin each.

So far I have found two ways to get coins.

1st is to sell furniture I get from sending my caretaker on the long 9hr shopping trips. The furniture I have gotten from the 6hr shopping trip does not give me this option. It's 1 coin for 1 furniture piece.

2nd is raising the caretaker's stats improves the chances of getting a coin when returning from a shopping trip. I have only gotten this from a 9hr so unsure if they give them out on a 6hr. You improve your caretaker's stats by talking to them everyday.

I'm almost certain that Home Coins are not being distributed when selling furniture. Unsure of when you're supposed to get them from shopping trips, but I have sold at least two Shopping items not found in Miranda shop and received zero coins. I thought it was extra strange because it even told me exactly how many coins I was receiving for selling that deco, still zero coins. I am going to find some time to send a ticket. I don't think many people have noticed yet....

do not worry about coins, they are totally unneeded at this point
send your caretaker shopping for 6 or 9 hour in the tab where you get rewards from collecting stuff
the collection rewards will improve your home in no time and get you the quests for the event rewards

They are being given. I got 12 from selling items, so far.
Note that the coins are ETC items. They will be in the inventory of the character you sold the item on (or in their coin purse, if they have one and it had a free slot).

Not all furniture items trashed in the furniture storage give coins but most do. So far some tiny mushroom homes items, like the ones Miranda sells for meso, do not give a coin when trashed and the few boss drop items that I've trashed (like the OMNI-CLN Vacuum) do not give coins either. The rest have giving me a coin each time I've trashed an item out of storage. You will get a notification before it's trashed and that notification will tell you if you're going to get a coin or not.

At first I was hardly getting coins and was worried I needed them but you don't, truly coins right now are not important. They play a role when you just have too many multiple furniture items and no space to store them, then it's a good time to clean up your storage by trashing items for coins.
