It's not that we're "supposed" to. We can wait and let the launcher do its thing after the maintenance is over. But if you manual patch before that, you'll be able to log in right as the maintenance ends, instead of only then starting the wait for the download and the patch.
The downside to using the manual patcher before Nexon says we can, is that if they discover a really bad bug they might have to change the client - and the manual patcher as well. If you patch too early, in that case, you have a bugged client, and you might have to re-download the entire game.

Oh that's easy, I just changed the number in the previous manual patch link from 177 to 178. It's not always up this early after the game update starts so I usually test it out every hour.
