Gollux fight question

So it's been a while since I've played the game so I don't know about boss revamps or anything of the sort. Anyways I was fighting gollux but had to scale down difficulties because I could not dodge the hands. Based on previous knowledge I went to destroy the shoulders but the hands were still flying. Is this intended or did I encounter a bug.

    If you enter the head, it locks the difficulty and current move set for that current phase.
    Which mean destroying any body parts after you enter the head does not change anything unless you somehow make it to the next phase.
