Notes:
- This guide is primarily for MapleStory Classic, not MapleStory.
- Nexon GameGuard for Classic is compatible with Valve's Proton implementation of Wine, unfortunately at time of writing MapleStory's Nexon GameGuard is not.
- Wine is a userspace only layer. It does not have access to root/admin resources. While it can see the system and read files, it is userspace only. Remember this well.
- While this guide is tested under GNU/Linux, it is not tested to work under FreeBSD 15.x due to limitations with FreeBSD's linuxulator implementation.
So, you've ditched Windows, but now want to play MapleStory Classic, now what? This guide will help you get up and running quickly to get back in the game and enjoy it with friends.
You will need at least the following installed on your system:
Lutris Launcher
Proton-GE 11.x
Winetricks
Linux 7.x or Linux-LTS 6.18.5x
Mesa 26.2.x Vulkan drivers
X11 or Wayland display systems
Pipewire with ALSA or OSS drivers
NetworkManager or equivalent connection manager.
Note: If you use Nvidia GPUs, please install the appropriate nvidia drivers and kernel module from your system distributor.
Step 1: Download the MapleStory Stand-alone Launcher and save it to your Downloads folder.
Step 2: Open Lutris and Click the + button to Add a Game, and select Install a Local Executable. Now select the MapleStory Launcher executable, and install it as normal. If it asks for a version of Wine to use, select the locally installed "Proton-GE" package.
Step 3: After installation, select the ^ arrow next to "Play" and click Configure. Under "Runner" options, make sure "Proton-GE" is selected. make sure F-Sync, E-Sync, FSR, BattleEye AC, and Easy AC options are all "Enabled", then click Save.
Step 4: Click the ^ Arrow next to the "wine" solo and open Winetricks. Select the Default prefix, and now select Install a Windows DLL.
Step 5: Install the following packages:
dinput8
dinputto8
sdl
xinput
Step 6: Select "Run winecfg" and it will open a configuration box. Go to the Libraries tab, and change the options as follows:
dinput (native, built-in)
dinput8 (native, built-in)
xinput1_1 (native, built-in)
xinput1_2 (native, built-in)
xinput1_3 (native, built-in)
input9_1_0 (native, built-in)
This will enable FULL controller support. You do need all 4 driver packages installed to properly enable DirectX and XInput layers.
Click Apply and Ok to exit. Close Winetricks.
Step 7: Launch MapleStory Classic and let it install normally to the wine virtual drive. You can opt to have the Nexon Launcher create a desktop shortcut.
From here, the game should work fine and should perform very well with maximum graphics settings.
Note:
You will have to start the Nexon Launcher before starting MapleStory Classic itself to properly load Proton-GE.
Oh yeah, one last step...
Step 8: Have fun and enjoy MapleStory Classic.
Thanks, and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
