KMST April 2025: The New HUD/UI Sucks
I hate the new UI.
The current one looks a lot better, the layout is better, and being able to hide the icons is better.
The less you can see on the screen, the better.
The more you have on the screen creates noise and clutter, harder to find things, and from a new player perspective that sees gameplay of MapleStory sees a bunch of clutter on the screen - sees the game is overwhelming - and never give the game a chance.
World of Warcraft has a cluttered HUD and UI and never gets new players, the player base is on a constant decline. This is just one to many issues to that game, but let us not make the same mistakes of another game for MapleStory, especially when our current HUD and UI is already the better design and layout.
The new create a character select screen has the issues of:
1. It is ugly to look at and has no personality to it.
- The current one is so much more visually appealing to look at and feels like you are about to truly enter and get lost in this fantasy world! The current design is peak perfection.
2. Way to overwhelming, especially for new and returning players, more emphasis on overwhelming for new players.
- The current single row design is a lot better as it does not display to much information at one time which is a lot more digestible for a new player with focusing on one thing at a time rather than see a page of 50 characters all at once.
The game needs to do a lot better at thinking about the new player experience to ensure long term growth, like how the old Reboot monsters and level to monster damage formula made the game so much more enjoyable to play for level pre-200 and without the need of a bunch of OP events and event rewards, as one of many examples.
Comments
people will say "oh you just hate change" or "you will like it over time" but, nah. i still don't like some of the UI changes that were made in recent years, for instance the character box when you click on people. old version was more charming, and could see their list of chairs. Am i a boomer? probably. but i just have certain preferences and that's ok.
but yea also the keybinding display on the right side of the screen looks weird with all the squares disconnected
hp/mp straight up looking dumbed down somehow and lifeless
ign off to the side like that ... ohnah. i mean, i'm pretty sure in old days it was off to the side too, but it was also connected to everything else in a thick bar.
I think its all part of the fact that the general playerbase is much older now than it was previously. instead of a bunch of kids/teenagers who like clicking squishy bubbly UI elements, now the general playerbase is 20-30+ year olds, who prioritize "efficiency" and edginess or "modernized" aesthetics. i prefer the charm of the UI from post big bang era (like 2011-2015 era UI) , the UI before our current one.
I really liked the one GMS Skill UI which they got rid of a patch or two later with nothing explaining why they got rid of it where it divided skills into passives, attacks, and buffs and was a lot more clean and organized. It was around the RED update, I forget what the patch was called that introduced it.
I also liked the current UI and HUD when they introduced it and still like it more.
The old (previous one to current) stat window I still think it looks nice and cleaner, and is more organized, and is not so dark and depressing with the current one being almost entirely grayscale while the other had more colour, was broken up better to find information easier, and was white which is far less depressing to look at over time.
The previous star even notifier is way better since it was more organized, significantly smaller, is way less in the way, and much easier to find information instead of the current one which feels like they just dumped everything in a pile on a generic window. The previous one is significantly better the more events that are taking place at one time.
The new KMST UI/HUD is more cluttered and less organized and less efficient though. It is change for the sake of change, and it is just bad and was unneeded and is unwanted.
