I honestly prefer pie over cake.
I feel like there are way more different options when it comes to pie, and you don't have to deal with a ton of icing.

This is hard for me to decide, as I like both and I make both frequently

Pie. Same, I don't like cakes with too much icing, and most of the time they do.

I like both, but I prefer pie since it tastes less weird with fruit. The icing on cake makes fruit seem sour or tasteless.

Pie. Pie seems to have a lot more options than cake does, plus the pie tasting good isn't based entirely around the frosting type. I don't care for whipped cream on my cakes, and guess what a lot of cakes have? Whipped cream. On a piece of pie, whipped cream is great. But not taking up the whole top of a piece of cake. >_<;.

flan doesn't have a crust. or any flour at all. it's purely a custard dish

that is correct! You've just discovered a third category of desert dishes: the custard!

there's a fourth category: cream dishes, such as the banana split, or chocolate sundae

not gelatinous enough to be a custard, yet softer than a pie or cake...
