The controls are so incredibly awkward on a laptop, I just cant play it. I wanted to get into this game but the controls! OH MAN! THE CONTROLS! I ended up rage quiting in options!

    Not completely.

You can't change the movement keys.

    I play on a laptop.

Typically you set up your keys so you have one hand on the movement keys and one hand handling the skills. Maple does not use the mouse often, and never during battle, so you never really have to use it.

Also laptop user- I find secondary key setting more efficient than basic. if I have no pet I use Q as pick up, w-t I use for main attacks, a-d I use for support skills, F for potion if I have no pet with auto potions, if I do then I use F as another support. Z-X for 1 cast per minute type skill; on my DB z is Asura and X is Ultimate Dark Sight.

` is for toggles or epic adenture, numbers are in game macros (from skill window) for buffs. some random keys for things I use out of battle. I do use manual potions sometimes, which I have on 0 for my DB.

I dont use any number after 5 for buffs. Key bindings vary per class for me. some need less and some need more.

As a laptop user, I suggest an external keyboard if you can work with it without interfering with your standard kb.

I would also recommend investing in a cheap USB mouse if you are laptop gamer.

Trying to do some of the shooting gallery style minigames is near impossible using a touch pad and also makes inventory management via drag & drop a lot less tedious.

As he said, secondary works way better than basic. At least for me it does. I use the function keys for buffs, number keys for situational skills or skills with huge cooldowns, qwer for potions and asdf for attack skills. shift is movement skills or a mount. alt is jump and ctrl is attack. It's all personal preference, though, there's no "right" way to bind keys.
