Hello all,

This is a a somewhat brief feedback post regarding the need for optimization in this game.
As it currently stands, I and several of my friends experience a minor lag spike every 5 seconds (I timed this). The lag/freeze is for the most part, visual. Sound tracks continue to play and as far as I can tell, inputs still register. However visually, the game is frozen.

Some contribute this to incompatible hardware, and this is where I find there to be an issue- I run a fairly upper mid range rig, the following are my specs:

CPU: Core i7-7567U
GPU: Nvidia 1080 FE
MOBO: Asus Maximus Hero VIII
PSU: 800W
Storage: Samsung 256GB SSD
RAM: 32GB Kingston HyperX

I can run most games on maximum graphics settings without losing FPS, however the lag issue happens specifically to Maplestory.

I've seen numerous posts across reddit, basilmarket, the forums or otherwise speaking of users with the same issue. Most attribute this to a coding problem, hence I think there is a massive need for the development team to address this issue somehow.

If there people would like additional information about my problem specifically, or if I need to further clarify any of what I had said, please tell me! The freeze/lag spike every 5 seconds makes the game quite literally unplayable, and in essence disables me from doing any bossing contents. I had tried to get used to this issue for an upwards of maybe 3 years now, and I'm seriously fed up with it (and also being unable to do any of the higher level bossing contents =()

This type of thing usually results from a USB device (keyboard, headset, mouse) connected to your computer.
Please try disconnecting any that you might have, and checking whether it helps.

(Obviously, the fact that something like a Corsair keyboard causes lag spikes in Maple, is a coding issue in Maple. But if you can work around it by turning off the Corsair Utility tool, or replacing the keyboard, then that's better than waiting for Nexon to come up with a solution.)

    Thank you for your reply.
I realized I forgot to include this in my original post, but I would like to let it be known know that I am aware that certain USB devices causes the lag spikes. As it happens I am using a Corsair keyboard at this very moment, and I do already have my corsair utility tool turned off, the problem persists.

I should clarify that the purpose of my post is feedback regarding the need for the code to be fixed and not that this problem exists- Telling your end users to buy a whole new keyboard just to play your "free to play game" is ludicrous.

Of course we can always work around it /at our expense/, I believe pressing Nexon to come up with a solution is much more permanent and productive than us always having to work around a company's bad work habits.

EDIT: Sorry this must come off super passive aggressive, Im getting quite frustrated with this issue and frankly hearing someone tell me to buy a whole new device and lay off the responsibility of fixing this issue to the end user instead of the creator itself is quite irritating =(
I know you only have good intentions trying to offer a solution.

I acknowledged Nexon's responsibility in my reply above. But while waiting for Nexon to locate and fix this bug, you are free to choose whether to take a break from Maple, play through the lag spikes, or get a $10 keyboard to make Mapling less painful.

You could help a fix come faster by posting in the Bug Reporting section, following the Bug Reporting Guidelines. In particular, specify the model of keyboard you have, the fact that the lag spikes stop when you disconnect it, the fact that the only game/application to experience these spikes is Maplestory, and the fact that turning the utility tool off does not help.

Thanks again for responding and letting me know about the Bug Reporting section. Somehow didnt see that forum, I'll make a post regarding this issue there now.
I mustn't have read your reply with enough attention the first time round, thanks for all the help!

It is quite strange. I have a mid-range setup, playing MapleStory since 2008 but never faced a similar issue. I've used this computer before to play MS, but never did anything similar.
For me the problem is a bit different, when I start the game it runs smoothly, no lag spikes. But after ~30 minutes of playing, lag spikes appear randomly (not the skills, nor the movement influences it). At first it's 1-2 spike/minute but it gradually gets worse, up to a spike per 3-5 seconds. The only solution is to restart the game. Which is quite painful, considering the game forgets all your buffs (like 2x coupon buffs, which can last up to 60 minutes). Not to mention the fact that 1 out of 3 times the game randomly crashes at Server/Channel/Character select, and the game takes quite long to load up. So yeah, I would really like to see a fix.
I also use a corsair keyboard. I know maplestory is written by incompetent developers (considering all the unhandled exceptions and crashes) but how on earth a keyboard or USB device causes the game to have lag spikes? No other game does anything similar.
Nexon get your skills together and please fix these problems, please use error codes for exceptions, show us a message, but don't freaking crash the game. That is the most disgusting thing a game (or any program) can do.......

With regards to your specific problem it sounds like a memory leak/corrupted memory issue to me. Basically over time the game fails to let go of memory no longer needed (discard useless data) and instead holds on to it, eventually leading to the game consuming too much memory, and as a result, you effectively run out of any memory to allocate to the game, at which point the game would crash.

Cant say I can offer a fix though, it seems like everyone is great at diagnosing but not so much fixing =/
