There's also the whole biz in the Heroes of Maple where they claim there used to be 365 gods who decided to create the transcendents. (iirc) (less)
So I have to grind for over an hour to get one of these elite bosses? None of them have ever been black, just normal looking, but 2x as big.
Elite Bosses spawn once 20 Elite Mobs have been killed, as I mentioned in the post above.
There's a delay between Emob spawns (I think it's 5 minutes) after one spawns, so it could take over an hour, yes.
You'll know you're close when you get the "feel something in the darkness" message.
As for the emobs themselves, there isn't a set number of mobs you have to kill, but rather a very low % chance when they're not on cooldown for spawning.
Higher level players kill mobs in greater number, so the elite mobs/bosses are designed for those people.
Don't let that discourage you from fighting them though, they're worth insane EXP and a good way to get a boost if you can kill them fast.
When you see an elite mob it'll have a sword over it's head. From weakest to strongest: Yellow > Orange > Red.
The stronger it is the more HP/DEF/ATK it'll have, but the more exp it'll give.
This might be why you felt you were having trouble with them.
Edit: This is what the elite bosses look like. (less)
getting the grim messages, meaning he's been summoning emobs, and last I recall, you can only summon emobs in your level range or with Rune of Darkness.
-snip-
Just want to point out this is actually wrong. You can still summon emobs on maps outside your level range, but the chance is extremely low.

I'll just throw in my two cents about playing classes etc.
Don't judge a character by the first two jobs. (1st and 2nd job) Most classes don't really start to flesh out into their final "… (more)feel" until 3rd.
If you still hate a character after 3rd job, feel free to put it on backburner while you try other classes.
If you don't like a job after 4th (Level 100) Then you may want to consider a difference class.
Most classes are fully fleshed out by 4th job (5th job is meant to compliment 4th), but sometimes 5th job (or hypers) can drastically change the way a character is played.
For the sake of trying out classes and getting a feel for them, I'd recommend you play each class to level 140.
This will give you an A rank character for legion (Important later on!), 2nd level of link skill (Also important!), and give you a good feel for the class as a whole.
